Tell us all about the Alpaca Wool line!
Selva: Working with this luxurious material has been a dream of mine for many years. Alpacas developed heavy coats to withstand the harsh climate of the Andes. As a result they’ve gifted us with alpaca wool: a super durable, warm yet breathable, lightweight, silky fiber. I have to admit a personal benefit in creating our own Pan American Apparel alpaca wool line. I am from Peru, which is where alpacas are native to and can be seen roaming wild. During the development of this collection I strengthened connection to my roots, my homeland, and my family. We hold this alpaca wool collection close to our hearts, and are so proud and thrilled to share it with our friends and customers!
What items are made of alpaca wool within the Pan American Apparel shop?
Selva: Created in small batches with certified organic 100% baby alpaca wool, and using sustainable methods, we’ve created a collection of durable, yet soft and luxurious sweaters, rompers with hats, and scarves for little ones. Our goal is a timeless, classic look. Each piece has a cable knit design, and all are gender neutral so each piece can be enjoyed by your little one and then easily passed down to a sibling or friend after it’s outgrown.
Where are the products sourced from?
Selva: We are honored to work with the very best alpaca yarn we could find in the Americas. It is RAS certified, which verifies alpaca animal welfare and land management requirements and tracks it from farm to final product. Our knitters work in a fully sustainable facility, which is more than just safe conditions. It means that we ensure that all processes, products, and manufacturing activities adequately address current environmental concerns and go above and beyond to meet all worker’s needs. What makes the products in the line organic?
Selva: All our sweet baby clothes are certified organic. GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard, means that fabrics have passed rigorous ecological and social criteria that guarantee the safety of our products for people and the environment. Parents can rest assured that all pieces in our alpaca collection are made responsibly, and are free of chemicals like flame retardants and harmful dyes.
How does Alpaca wool feel?
Selva: So soft, and not itchy! Alpaca wool fibers are fine, lightweight and silky. The fibers are hollow, which makes alpaca wool super light weight yet warm! Did you know that alpaca wool does not have lanolin, so it attracts less dust and dirt than sheep’s wool, staying cleaner longer?
Is there anything else you’d like to share about the alpaca wool collection?
Selva: Alpaca wool has many benefits! It is a strong, yet light weight, fiber that will also keep your little one warm while they romp around outside, making it the perfect material for layering and outwear. This long lasting wool is very luxurious but durable, so each gorgeous alpaca sweater, romper, or scarf, in our collection can be passed down for many years! Sustainable fashion at it’s best!
