Tell us about Lincoln Photography! How long have you been in business?

Rachel: Back in 2007 I was shooting portraits of my kid cousins on a 7 megapixel point-and-shoot. By sophmore year of college, I bought my first DSLR and fearlessly started taking portraits, which quickly led to my first engagement session and wedding bookings. My senior year I was skipping classes to photograph multi-day weddings around the east coast, and eventually began booking weddings and family portraits in Paris, LA, and Hawaii. I’ve learned from the best in the industry, won awards for my portraiture, and published two books. There’s nothing I love more than seeing families and couples laughing together, enjoying life, and making time stand still so they can relive these magical moments.

What made you want to work with families?

Rachel: I was lucky enough to have a mother who valued reliving memories through photographs. She gave me a point-and-shoot film camera on every childhood trip we took. I was on the path to becoming an interpreter, dreaming of traveling the world and being immersed in other cultures. But, a professional photo taken as I performed tango for an international charity event changed my life course. I realized then, the thrill of seeing a beautiful image of myself, full of passion for life, was something I needed to give to others. I treasure my family photos from as far back as the late 1800’s, and pictures of grandparents I only met as a baby – memories that can’t be recreated and that are lovingly preserved through photography. I understand the importance of capturing loving moments and showing who your family is *right now* so you can look back and relive moments for decades to come.

What are your strengths compared to other family photographers?

Rachel: I understand how precious every family’s time is each day, so my sessions are shorter, but without feeling rushed. I work efficiently and offer plenty of direction the entire time so every family has fun and comes away with a wide variety of images they’ll love. At the end of every session, the parents are beaming and tell me, “That was so much fun! We can’t believe you got our son/daughter to smile like that for the camera!” Through my Master’s degree in new media photojournalism, I gained insight into letting a moment unfold naturally, and candidly, to document raw emotion. I can tell a story with a single image, or compose a coherent series, bringing your family’s love and bonding to life. (Corcoran College of Art + Design, prior to the merger with GWU).

What attracts parents to work with you?

Rachel: Parents love the natural, honest, smiling photos I consistently deliver. My expertise in posing families with small children, getting smiles and laughter out of kids, and even engaging the teenagers who aren’t interested in the shoot, are things all of my clients value. I’m on time, am flexible with your schedule, and thorough in my pre-shoot preparation guidance. I also offer print collections that are easy to order and hassle-free, so all you have to do is relax and enjoy your photos.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your business?

Rachel: I speak French, Spanish, and some Arabic, and have been a tango and swing dancer for 20 years. My experience living in multiple countries taught me how to communicate with people from all walks of life, a skill that has become invaluable to my photography and one that helps me make my clients feel instantly comfortable while they’re in front of the camera.
