Tell us about Pan American Apparel! How long have you been in business?
Selva: I launched my business in January this year. I’ve worked in supply chain sales and management for over 10 years working with vendors and customers from around the world. I feel like Pan American Apparel is the junction of my passion for natural parenting, my culture, and years of business experience.
What made you want to work with parents/families/kids/babies?
Selva: My passion for working with families started when I had my first child, Victoria, ten years ago. I was one of the firsts in my circle of friends to have a baby. I learned the importance of community and family during those first years and felt compelled to be an active part of that “village.” I focused on fostering natural methods of parenting and ways to support the bond between baby and parents. I’ve had the opportunity to participate in parent support groups, lead a mom-to-mom breastfeeding group, taught March of Dime New Mother Care and Nutrition classes to refugees, and formed so many strong friendships.
What is the philosophy behind Pan American Apparel?
Selva: PAA brings sustainable, certified organic baby and children’s clothing to parents, but also to aims to fill the ethical fashion gap as a whole globally. Every purchase you make from Pan American Apparel shifts the trajectory of the clothing industry. At our core, we believe the world benefits when we show responsibility to our environment, our children, and the hands that do the work. Our three pillars are: Beauty: Lovingly and carefully handmade by underserved artisans and ethical makers from around the globe, resulting in the highest quality clothing and products for your little one. Balance: We can meet the needs of our babies and children, while also understanding the needs of the producers, workers, and the earth. Responsibility: We do our part. From decreasing our carbon footprint, to sustainably producing our products, to doing right by the makers. We do it for the health of our little ones, and for the love of the Earth and it’s future.
What are your strengths compared to others in your category?
Selva: We work as directly as possible with producers and handle all purchasing, warehousing, and shipping, we can keep costs as tight as possible and offer the lowest prices, while still being fair to the workers that participate in all parts of the production of the clothes. We focus on being as transparent as possible with regards to the materials that are used in each product, the ways that our partners support artisans, and the impact on the environment.
What attracts parents to work with you?
Selva: I believe that the main thing that differentiates us from other clothing shops is our that PAA does the work for parents. We bring them the best for their little one’s sensitive skin by doing the research and building relationships with sustainable vendors and producers from around the world. Also, quality. Our handmade clothing is heirloom quality made of luxury fibers such as organic Pima Cotton and Baby Alpaca wool. Everything is made in small batches and so pieces are very original and truly stand out.
What are some cool new and innovative trends you’ve seen in your area of expertise?
Selva: Parents are shopping smarter and have higher expectations of clothing stores! We see that parents are becoming more conscious of the impact the fashion industry has on workers and the environment. Parents are also becoming increasingly aware of how synthetic fibers and harsh dyes and chemicals on baby clothing can hurt their baby’s and children’s skin and health.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about Pan American Apparel?
Selva: Even though we are a very new clothing and accessory shop, we have gained a lot momentum! This Spring and Summer we will have a pop up shop every month. New products are launching every few weeks such as handmade dolls from Russia, wooden baby hair brushes from Germany, new designs of Baby Alpaca wool rompers and sweaters from Peru, and so much more!
