How should a family best prepare for a photo session?

Jamie: To start styling for a family session, first know what your photographers style is like. Some are deep golden hues, some are light and airy, some are warm and some are cool colors. You don’t want to show up at a “light and airy” session wearing all dark colors! Talk with your photographer for guidance!

What type of attire is best for photos?

Jamie: Your outfits should, most of all, be a reflection of you. However ,it’s important to include certain colors, textures, and styles that will translate better than others on camera. I prefer neutral colors, earth tones, and warm colors. For the ladies: You should choose pieces that show movement, movement creates drama in your photos. Flowy maxi dresses are great, but make sure they also hug at the waist – bubble dresses and tops do not photograph well and can make you look bigger when moving around. Add texture with lace, tassels, fringe…this will enhance the overall look of the photo. Layers are your friend. Don’t shy away from patterns, BUT, avoid busy patterns that are too distracting or have too many different, conflicting patterns. Incorporate accessories, these elements add that little extra touch to your photos by creating some dimension. For the guys, it’s best to stick with a neutral shirt or sweater, nice shoes, a pair of fitted pants, a belt and other layering pieces such as cardigan or jacket. Avoid baggy jeans, unfitted shirts, polos, running shoes, and shirts with logos .

Do you provide a wardrobe for mamas to choose from for their maternity photos?

Jamie: I have a client closet that I open up to clients for any session. I am still building my wardrobe but I have many dresses and flowy pieces for women (most are bump friendly), a handful of outfits for both boys and girls and some simple Henley type shirts for men. I also offer a complimentary styling service to all my clients that allow them to fill out a questionnaire which includes the number of people in the session, gender and size of each person, the style of clothing you desire, and color pallets. Then a collection of clothes will be generated for you to put together outfits. You can incorporate clothing you already have, items from my client closet and then order the rest that you need. It’s a very easy process that helps my clients get the best out of their photos.

What styling tips do you have for newborn photos?

Jamie: For newborns, I recommend definitely sticking to neutral colors with very minimal patterns. You want all the attention on the baby, so keep it simple. A pretty white/cream dress for mama and a neutral tee for dad is great. As far as baby, I provide outfits and wraps to use. All are neutral colors and simple. In my opinion, less is more for babies. I love the natural look.

Are there certain props, blankets or clothing items you like to have on hand for newborn sessions?

Jamie: I always bring a ton of items to baby sessions. Many wraps, little outfits, accessories, as well as blankets and some props such as bowls and baskets for those that choose my “posed” package. Parents do not need to have anything but I welcome anything special they want to include!

Is there anything else you’d like to share about photo session styling?

Jamie: I think one of the best ways to see what you like is to just look at other peoples family photos that you enjoy. Look at photographers websites or instagrams to see how others are styled and find what you like and mirror that. And don’t be afraid to ask your photographer. If their photos are consistent then they will definitely know what looks good together for their style of photography.
