Raising a child in a eco-conscious manner all starts with a single step that dominoes into a lifestyle. Whether you have a baby on the way or are looking to transition your family into a more organic style, Selva of Pan American Apparel is sharing why you should buy sustainable products for you baby. From clothes to toys and linens and everything in between, any little decision can make a big impact on baby. If you’re ready to reduce that carbon footprint, keep on reading!
What makes a baby product sustainable?
Selva: Sustainable baby products are hot right now. But, what does sustainable actually mean? A sustainable product is made from renewable resources; in other words, resources that can’t be fully depleted. Making and using a sustainable product uses as little energy as possible, and produces minimal waste. Socially sustainable businesses also care about the health, wellbeing, and success of their employees — as well as the residents of the cities and countries in which they operate. When a parent purchases a sustainable baby product, they will be confident that the company worked in a socially responsible way, which means there was no forced or child labor and health or safety concerns.
Why is it important to buy sustainable products for your baby?
Selva: It is the right start! Buying sustainable products for your baby means you are investing in a better future for your little one. Not only are sustainably made products beautiful and natural, through the purchase of that baby product you are supporting an economy that cares about the environment, the people that make the products, and the health and well being of their customers.
How are sustainable products helpful for babies?
Selva: Sustainable products are good for the environment AND for baby! As your baby naps in that organic cotton sleeper, or bites down with sore gums on that natural teething toy, you’ll rest assured that the sustainable products you bought for your little one are gentle on their skin and soothing on their gums. On top of the good environmental and social aspects of sustainability, there is the added benefit of a healthier product for your little one. Sustainable baby products go through meticulous tests to make sure they are good for babies. One of the most prestigious certifications that sustainable companies obtain for their natural products is the GOTS, or Global Organic Textile Standard. GOTS is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. We chose to work with GOTS certified fabrics because they carry the best seal of approval we found, even though it might be a tough, very high standard for some sustainable companies to obtain.
If you could recommend just 3 of the most important products to buy that are sustainable, what would you recommend?
Selva: What comes to mind are those things that babies and children go through in large quantities. To reduce your little one’s carbon foot print I would recommend buying sustainable clothing, toys, and sustainably grown food.
What sustainable products does Pan American Apparel carry?
Selva: At Pan American Apparel, all the fabric our makers use for your little one’s clothing is GOTS certified. Currently we carry a luxurious line of Organic Pima Cotton Basics in classic and minimalist styles. We also work with Naturtex and Child’s Way of Peru to bring parents a very unique set of pieces made of organic native cotton, also knows as Pakucho. This is a very special fiber that is grown and harvested in the same way it has been for thousands of years. Sustainability is at the core of Pakucho cotton. We also carry beautiful toys handmade in small shops in limited batches. These toys are created by makers that respect the environment and the process, and pour their soul into the products they create. For example, we work with Kaspi Land of Ecuador. Their family run workshop hand makes developmental toys out of local Ecuadorian Pine Wood. We are also proud to work with YasyaVasya, an artisans in Russian that crafts whimsical linen dolls, each with it’s own bright personality. We recently added gorgeous soft-sole leather toddler shoes to our shop. These beautiful shoes are handmade by FabianoMoccs, a small shoe maker in Lima, Peru. The mother who designs and creates the tiny shoes, does so in a respectful, zero-waste approach. The family is expecting their second child! All products we bring on board are created with our three pillars in mind: beauty, balance, and responsibility. To learn more about our artisans and eco-partners, please visit our website!
